ENG 215 - Public and Professional Writing (3)

Prerequisite: ENG 101   or ENG 102 or permission.
This course will engage students in the forms, functions, and implications of writing in public and professional settings, thus preparing them to apply their interpretive skills and language acumen in a wide range of career fields, including business, government, health sciences, education, law, politics, policy making, public relations, sports management, social media, information technology, advocacy, and more. Students will explore the rhetorical challenges and practical necessities of writing with clear purpose and technical precision for diverse audiences with varied needs and complex values. They will become more competent and deliberate as they develop proficiency with various types of writing common to the workplace and the public sphere. They will learn to gather technical information about complicated subjects and translate it into usable forms for busy decision makers. They will organize, cooperate, and communicate to manage multifaceted projects and produce appropriate deliverables under the pressure of hard deadlines and high stakes. They will identify methods for analyzing operational situations and implement strategies to complete necessary tasks. In doing so they will build a foundation of principles and techniques that will inform their future work and equip them to adapt to an ever changin economic and social landscape.
