Mathematics and Data Analytics Major 4-Year Plan
Overall, a Mathematics and Data Analytics Major requires 39 credits MTH classes with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above, along with the completion of CMP145.
Notes:
-
MTH225 and MTH250 are prerequisites for several other classes. Taking them as a sophomore, if possible, is a good idea. Taking them as a freshman is not generally recommended.
-
CMP145 is a requirement that can be taken at any time. It is recommended to try to take it within the first two years because a Computing minor is easy to pair with an MDA major.
-
Each student must complete one 400-level course (usually in their third or fourth year).
-
MTH403 Abstract Algebra is offered spring of odd years. This course is required for all Math Ed majors and recommended for students planning on graduate school in math.
-
MTH433 Introductory Analysis is offered fall of odd years. It is recommended for students planning on graduate studies in math or statistics.
-
MTH415 An Introduction to the Theory of Probability and Statistics is offered fall of even years. It is recommended for students focusing on a data analytics track or planning on graduate studies in statistics.
-
An MDA major requires 39 credits of MTH classes with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above. *All classes listed above are requirements except for MTH225, MTH315, and MTH316. These are generally taken because 15 additional credits are required in Mathematics above and including MTH225 (excluding MTH324, MTH325, MTH326, and MTH327). Other courses that can be taken in that category include MTH334 Complex Variables, MTH337 Multivariate Calculus, MTH351 Geometries, MTH403 Abstract Algebra, MTH433 Introductory Analysis, and MTH415 An Introduction to the Theory of Probability and Statistics.
-
MTH497 must be taken for 2 credits but can be taken for one credit in the fall and one in the spring. Talk with your advisor about whether you should be doing that or not.
