Math Placement

Mathematics Placement

Please urge students to take the required math course as soon as possible, while they retain more of the math they learned from high school. Before enrolling a student in a math course, check to see if a specific math course is required or recommended for the student’s intended major.

Basic Mathematical Skills

All students must demonstrate adequate basic computational skills before enrolling in any mathematics course numbered 100 or above. This requirement may be met in any of five ways:

  • by attaining an ACT math score of 19 or higher,
  • by attaining an SAT math score of 530 or higher,
  • by passing Doane’s Math Placement Test,
  • by completing DLC 090 or DSS 090 (Crete campus only) with a grade of C- or higher, or
  • by transferring credits that are equivalent to DLC 090/DSS 090 or college-level mathematics.

MTH Courses that Satisfy the Mathematical Reasoning FAK and Who Should Take Them

MTH 235 Calculus
  • required for students who major in Math & Data Analytics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Engineering
  • required for students who are completing the prerequisites for Pharmacy, Optometry, or graduate school. It is strongly recommended for students applying to Medical school.
  • students should have taken algebra and at least some trigonometry

Other prerequisites: High school pre-calculus (algebra and trigonometry) or MTH125

Good questions to ask: Do you remember learning about the unit circle and logarithms?

MTH 125 Precalculus
  • for students who need Calculus and aren’t quite ready (maybe did not have trigonometry at all or just finished the DSS course and needs to take Calculus)
  • required for students who major in Science (Calculus is recommended though), Exercise Science: Pre-Athletic Training,  Pre-Occupational Therapy, Pre-Physical Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, OR for students completing the prerequisites for Medical (check to see if Calculus is required), Nursing, Dental, Physician’s Assistant programs or some program that requires Precalculus (otherwise DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS)

Note: This is the only algebra based math course taught on the Crete campus.

Good question to ask (see transcript if uncertain): Did you get a B in your advanced algebra course: e.g. algebra 2, college algebra, precalculus?

MTH 120 Intro to Data thru Visualization
  • required for students who major in Math & Data Analytics
  • highly recommended for Accounting, Agribusiness, Business, or Economics majors
  • a good idea for students majoring in Applied Sports Science, Biology (Climate Change emphasis or Biotechnology emphasis), Computing, any science (other than Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Engineering), and any program that involves data (for instance Psychology and Sociology)
MTH 108 Modeling and Applications
  • for students who need an algebra based course with an emphasis on practical applications
Note: Only taught for the Lincoln campus online. Not available to Crete students.
MTH 107 Problem Solving
  • a great basic problem-solving course suitable for students in any major
