CMM 285 - Introduction to Writing Creative Nonfiction (3) This course will provide students with a critical and practical foundation in the writing of creative nonfiction. Creative nonfiction includes many forms and variations of the essay, though the boundaries among them are not rigid, and writing in one form will often include elements of other forms. Students will study this diversity and the characteristics of these forms, with special emphasis on literary journalism. Through analysis of exemplary texts and through their own creative writing, students will address issues of craft, examining literary tools at the disposal of the creative nonfiction writer. In so doing, students will also consider the importance of research, accurate reportage, and the writer’s responsibilities regarding memory and truth versus invention.
Prerequisite: ENG 101 . Offered fall term. (Cross referenced with ENG 285 )
