ENG 305 - American Literature to 1865 (3)


This course introduces students to the major developments in American Literature from the Colonial Era through the Civil War. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to describe the major historical and literary movements of Puritanism, the Enlightenment, Transcendentalism, and Sentimental Fiction. Students will be able to describe literary texts and movements in their historical contexts, particularly industrialization, Native American removal, race slavery, and the women’s suffrage movement. Students will conduct research in these and other areas and shape an argument into a major research paper.
